A map pin can put you beside the correct building but outside the wrong entrance, across a barrier or next to a station exit with a long staircase.
The useful question is not simply which map is “best.” It is which route reaches your actual entrance at the time you need it, with your luggage and language settings.
Quick answer
Save the Korean place name and street address, compare the actual journey and inspect the last approach. NAVER Map officially lists English map and navigation features. Korea’s February 2026 conditional approval of Google’s map-data export is a policy development, not proof that every desired Google Maps feature is already available in your installed app. [1][2]
Separate the policy from the product
On February 27, 2026, the government announced conditional approval of high-precision map-data export, subject to security-related conditions. This is relevant when assessing older articles that make permanent, absolute claims about Google Maps in Korea. [2]
It does not establish a universal rollout date for every routing feature. Separate permission concerning data, the provider’s implementation and the feature you can actually use.
Avoid both “Google Maps can never work in Korea” and “the policy changed, so everything works exactly as at home.” Test the journey you need and retain a fallback.
Give the app a precise destination
Copy the venue’s address from your reservation, accommodation confirmation or organizer’s notice. Keep the branch, floor and entrance instructions. An English nickname alone may identify a different place.
A useful private note contains the exact venue, Korean address, floor or entrance, appointment time in Korea and a contact route. Do not include passport or payment details in a note you will show to drivers or shop staff.
If the same venue appears differently in two apps, compare the address rather than choosing whichever pin looks more confident. The operator can confirm the entrance.
Inspect the journey, not only the destination
| Situation | What to check | Frequent assumption to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Subway | Line, direction, transfer and exit | The nearest entrance leads to the right platform |
| Suitcase | Elevator route and street approach | The shortest walk has no stairs |
| Pop-up or restaurant | Branch, floor and admission entrance | A permanent shop is the temporary venue |
| Taxi pickup | Correct road side and lawful stopping point | A car can stop at any pin |
| Late journey | The complete remaining connection | A daytime route still runs unchanged |
NAVER’s developer listing describes transit and street-view features that help with these tasks. That does not certify every entrance or accessibility condition as complete and current. [1]
Use an address-first workflow
Start with the service containing your saved place. Confirm the address, then search that address in the navigation app you can use. Compare the text before relying on the route.
Inspect the station exit and final crossing. For an upstairs appointment, save the floor separately. A route to the building does not prove your reservation or explain every admission condition.
English support also has limits. The map’s language setting does not guarantee that every business notice, review or linked booking page is translated. [1]
Verify with signs at the station
Before taking a long corridor or going through a gate, compare the line and platform direction with current signs. Ask staff before traveling farther into the wrong area.
Useful questions are 엘리베이터는 어디에 있나요?—Where is the elevator?—and 이 주소로 가려면 몇 번 출구로 나가야 하나요?—Which exit should I use for this address?
An elevator symbol is helpful, but an outage or construction can change the available route. Follow current station instructions rather than forcing the original plan.
When search or directions fail
Search the full Korean address without the business name. Compare it with the operator’s own location information. If the approach remains unclear, contact the venue before walking around the wrong block repeatedly.
Save essential address and exit information before you lose connectivity. A screenshot preserves information but does not update disruptions, vehicle arrivals or your current position. It is not the same as working offline navigation.
When login blocks a particular feature, separate that feature from the immediate task. Another routing method or direct entrance instructions may be faster than repeatedly creating accounts.
Frequently asked questions
Should I delete Google Maps before visiting?
There is no need for an all-or-nothing choice. Keep useful saved information, verify actual routing and maintain an alternative.
Does NAVER Map support English?
Its official listing says yes. That should not be extended to all third-party content within or linked from the app. [1]
Is the nearest exit always best?
No. Compare stairs, crossings, accessibility and the actual entrance, especially with luggage.
Your next move
Save your accommodation’s Korean address, entrance instructions and route from your arrival station. Use that same address-first method for restaurants, shops and appointments.
