You can pay for a snack with a foreign credit card, then discover that topping up a transit card at the same shop is a different transaction. The confusing part is not just which bank card you have. It is which balance you are trying to fund.
This guide separates ordinary physical Tmoney, mobile Tmoney, WOWPASS and Seoul’s short-term ticket products. They should not be treated as interchangeable.
Quick answer
With an ordinary physical Tmoney card, Korean-won cash is the straightforward standard top-up route described in Tmoney’s visitor guidance. Supported mobile alternatives exist for iPhone and Android, but they have their own payment and device requirements. A working phone top-up does not automatically fund your separate plastic card. [1] [2] [7]
First identify the product in your hand
| Your product | Your next action |
|---|---|
| Ordinary physical Tmoney | Use a supported cash top-up counter or machine; verify the fare balance afterwards. |
| MobileTmoney on a supported iPhone | Check the official app’s overseas-card funding flow and device eligibility. |
| KOREA TOUR CARD Tmoney on Android | Check app availability, compatible NFC operation and the supported card flow before depending on it. |
| WOWPASS with Tmoney | Check the separate transit balance; use a supported transfer or physical-card top-up method. |
| Climate Card short-term pass | Check pass coverage and validity; it is not ordinary Tmoney stored credit. |
The distinctions above follow the relevant operator and city guidance. They are the reason one traveller’s successful top-up method may not apply to your card. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Option 1: Add cash to an ordinary physical Tmoney card
Take the card and Korean-won cash to a Tmoney top-up counter or station machine. A participating convenience-store counter is a useful place to ask: show the card and ask for a reload, not a new card. At a machine, select the card-reload function. Buying the plastic card does not necessarily include travel credit. [1] [3]
For example, you can ask:
티머니 만 원 충전해 주세요. — Please load 10,000 won onto my Tmoney card.
That amount is an example, not a recommended budget or a transport fare. Choose an amount that fits your next journeys, then check the resulting balance before leaving. Do not confuse the card purchase receipt with confirmation that a reload was completed.
Option 2: Use the supported MobileTmoney iPhone route
Mastercard’s April 2026 announcement confirms a visitor flow using MobileTmoney and Apple Pay. Tmoney’s current App Store version history also lists overseas-card support including Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay and JCB. This is not a guarantee for every issuer, card or device. [2] [4]
Open the official MobileTmoney App Store listing and check the current device, operating-system and payment requirements. Use the visitor-compatible instructions, inspect fees and currency before authorizing payment, and confirm that the digital transit balance actually increased.
Do not assume that holding an ordinary foreign bank card against a subway gate is the same process. You are funding and using a supported transit card on the device. The app also lists physical-card balance and reload features, but those are a separate flow. Check the funding methods offered for that exact card rather than treating overseas-card support for mobile Tmoney as proof that every plastic card can use it. [4]
If the app does not offer a usable payment route for your card, keep the physical-card-and-cash option available instead of relying on an untested workaround when a train is about to leave.
Option 3: Check the Android visitor-app route
Android users can check KOREA TOUR CARD Tmoney, published by Tmoney. Its listing describes NFC transit use and funding with supported credit or debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB and UnionPay. It requires compatible NFC operation and a data or Wi-Fi connection. [7]
Being an Android phone is not enough to establish compatibility. Confirm that the app is available and usable on your device, inspect charges and refund conditions, and verify the balance before relying on it. This is an option to assess, not a tested recommendation for every handset. Keep the physical-card-and-cash route as a backup.
Option 4: Move eligible WOWPASS funds to its transit balance
WOWPASS’s shopping balance is separate from its Tmoney balance. Its guide describes an NFC top-up process that transfers funds from the WOWPASS balance to Tmoney on a supported WOWPASS card. That feature should not be generalized to every ordinary physical Tmoney card. [5]
Check which balance the app is showing. Follow the top-up process through to its completion screen and keep the card in the requested position while scanning. A healthy shopping balance does not prove that the transit side has enough money for your next ride.
The Seoul ticket-machine exception
From March 13,, 2026, Seoul introduced overseas-card payment at upgraded vending machines on Lines 1–8 for short-term Climate Card passes and single-journey tickets. The announcement does not establish overseas-card reloads for every ordinary physical Tmoney card. [6]
Before buying a pass simply because the machine accepts your bank card, check that the pass covers your actual route and travel dates. Review the machine’s total and service-fee display. Payment convenience alone does not make it the right ticket for your itinerary.
When the top-up fails
Stop and identify the failure: unsupported card, rejected bank authorization, incomplete NFC scan or the wrong product menu. Read the exact message before trying again. If a payment appears pending but no balance was added, check the transaction history and ask the operator before creating repeated payment attempts.
For a gate problem, move aside and ask station staff. For a top-up problem, contact the provider that controls that particular balance. Save receipts until the balance and charges are reconciled.
Frequently asked questions
Can I top up any physical Tmoney with a foreign card now?
Do not assume so. The product, device and funding channel matter. An overseas-card option for a mobile card or short-term pass is not universal physical-card support.
Should I load all my travel money at once?
Consider starting with a smaller useful amount. Check the refund route, fees and eligibility before leaving a large unused balance on any travel product.
Your next move
Choose one primary transit-payment method and one practical fallback before your first journey. The important question is not “Does Korea accept my card?” but “Can this payment method fund this exact transit product?”
